How’ve you been? Purdue treating you well? How’s the FSAE car doing?

I’ve been busy, very very busy. FSAE is going and I’m finally getting around to making all our carbon parts.

Good to hear you’re doing well. Best wishes with the rest of your semester and finishing the car before Michigan.

Are you gonna be back for a while now? :D Your build posts on your car were one of the first Oppo memories.

Carbon fiber was one of the coolest materials I got to work with in FSAE and I have never met such a material that was so fascinating yet annoying to work with sometimes, unless you are working with pre-preg. Does your team go to FSAE Michigan?

Yeah, somebody posted a “bandit bait” yesterday and that made me go riffling through your old Kinja because I needed a fix of Banditry.

Yep, we’ll be at Michigan this year. It took quite a learning curve this year, we tried to do pre-preg but just couldn’t find reliable access to an oven or autoclave so we’re back to doing standard wet layups. We’re trying to focus on getting nice surface finishes this year with a desire to do bare carbon.

Well pre-preg is also ludicrously expensive, wet laying will be a lot cheaper just more labor intensive. Is the carbon being used for anything structural or suspension wise or just lightweight panels? I think we drove the judges nuts with our hybrid chassis last year. I’ll really miss competing in FSAE since I graduated almost a year ago. If you see Lehigh University (#106 IIRC) drop by to say hello since they are all good people.

We got 100 yards of prepreg for free this year but just can’t use it. We’re using carbon suspension tubes, all of our body work, wings, the seat, and other stuff. The goal is to get a half monocoque within the next two years.

Those are some pretty good goals to have. Make sure everyone stays on top of stuff, it’s a sorry sight when you see teams still building nearly half the car and then attempt to get it to try and pass tech. Also the key to success no matter how bad design or some of the dynamic events go as long as you finish endurance you are golden. Just as important is making sure you have a checklist to do before you leave every night. Such as keeping the battery on a trickle charger and making sure it is topped up all the time. My freshman year my team finished the car, had plenty of testing, was the first through tech, went through all the events easily and then the car died on endurance since we had forgot to charge the battery overnight. A car that was built for literally less than $7000 fighting toe to toe with cars well over 10x that price point was stopped by a battery, we were absolutely crushed.
